Freelance Writing Coaching

Interested in the freelance life?

My Origin Story

I started freelancing somewhat by accident 10 years ago. Craving a life outside of work, I quit my dream job at FITNESS in New York City to move back to Iowa to pursue journalism in a new way. My FITNESS editors allowed me to keep contributing my “I Did It” column as I embarked on a digital-focused career at Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, and I did so with gusto for the next several years.

As editors shifted brands, referrals were shared and as my byline was spotted, new contacts started rolling in. By day, I was the editor of Recipe.com or running social media for Better Homes & Gardens, and by night, I was freelancing for a growing pool of magazines, beauty companies and bloggers.

I had always said, “I’ll make the leap to full-time freelance when I get married.” Still single at 30, sitting on a beach on a solo international trip and thinking about how my freelance career had exploded to a pace where I was turning work away each week, I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t at least try. So I turned in my notice. I was scared; I think my parents were terrified. (Sorry, Mom and Dad!)

January 1, 2019 was day 1 of Life 2.0 as an entrepreneur. More than three years have passed and I never could have imagined how much life has changed. Today, I:

  • Wake up every day excited to get paid for work I’d gladly do for free

  • Have built a portfolio of passion projects

  • Truly learn something new every day

  • Set my own schedule that allows me to travel the globe

  • Have the opportunity to interview experts in their fields and team up with editors I adore

  • Earn a six-figure income via projects that feed my soul
