About Karla

I’m a Des Moines, Iowa-based freelance writer, editor, and former fitness instructor who balances my love of food and drink with my passion for fitness. (Or tries to, at least!).

After graduating from Iowa State University summa cum laude with a double major in magazine journalism and kinesiology, I moved to New York City to pursue a full-time print magazine career. Two years later, I transitioned to Des Moines and stepped into more digital editorial roles—and started my part-time freelance journey to continue contributing to print.

Over the course of the next six years, I passed my level one sommelier exam with the Court of Master Sommeliers, received my personal trainer certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and group fitness instructor certification through the Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). And in the office, I was the editor of Recipe.com, ran social media for Better Homes & Gardens and was associate digital food editor at Better Homes & Gardens. On January 1, 2019, I launched my full-time freelance writing career.

I’ve contributed to magazines as an editor or writer for more than 14 years, and specialize in topics like food, wine, travel, nutrition, fitness, total-body health, psychology and beauty. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me on a never-ending quest to explore every inch—and every taste—the world has to offer. From skydiving two hours after finishing a half-marathon to eating my way through Peru to talking to every stranger (or as I like to view them, new friend) at spin class, there's little I won't try to get to the heart of a story and to live each day to the fullest.
